ICPA Heads of Services Meeting – Sharing Experience and Expanding the Network

The Heads of Services who attended the 18th Annual ICPA Conference in Bucharest again met for one day prior to the conference to share their experience, challenges and practices and to learn from each other. The annual event first started in Colorado Springs in 2013 and has developed into an important feature of the conference week. Again, very well attended by 14 Commissioners and Directors-General, the Bucharest meeting was content rich and a forum of intensive exchange and learning about corrections worldwide. The International Association for Correctional and Forensic Psychology (IACFP) is one such organization that ICPA has worked with closely in the last number of years. The IACFP publishes Criminal Justice and Behavior(CJB) , an internationally recognized journal of criminal justice research. It is the oldest organization in service to mental health and behavioral-change professionals in criminal justice in the world. During the tour attendees had the opportunity to learn about this unique and historical establishment, and we would like to share this information with you in this article.  Bucharest Jilava Penitentiary was set up in 1907, on the premises of Fort No. 13 Jilava, one of 18 forts built in 1860-1870, around the city of Bucharest, which was part of the circular defensive system of the capital, aimed at defending against attacks by Turkish armies. 18th ICPA Annual Conference, Bucharest, 2016 – Overview

The International Corrections and Prisons Association organised its 18th Conference and AGM in Bucharest with the support of The National Administration of Penitentiaries – Romania. The event took place between 23 and 28 October 2016 in Radisson Blu Hotel, in the heart of the Romanian capital. The theme of the conference was “Correctional Leadership – Engaging Hearts and Minds”. 450 Attendees from more 75 countries opened their hearts and engaged their minds for collaboration in the name of better professional corrections.
